Basic Requirements for a J-1 International Teacher Visa
To be eligible for a J-1 teacher visa, you must:
- Be a non-US citizen and meet your country’s qualifications for teaching in primary or secondary school.
- Have sufficient English proficiency to communicate with US students effectively.
- Currently work as a teacher in your home country or have completed an advanced degree, or have at least two years of full-time teaching experience in the past eight years.
- Hold a degree equivalent to a US bachelor’s in the subject you plan to teach.
- Meet the professional teaching standards of the US state where you intend to work.
- Have no involvement in criminal activities or questionable conduct.
Enter the US solely to teach full-time at a primary or secondary school.
To be eligible for an H1B visa as a teacher, the following conditions must be met:
- A bachelor’s degree (or higher) is typically required for the teaching position.
- The foreign national must have at least a bachelor’s degree or equivalent in a field related to the teaching position. Relevant work experience may substitute for education (3 years of experience can equal 1 year of college).
- The teacher must possess any required teaching licenses, or show documentation from the licensing board if the license can’t be obtained before entering the US.
- The employer must obtain a certified Labor Condition Application (LCA) from the Department of Labor, attesting that:
